T-Mobile Welcome Back ‘Welcome Home’ Ad and Their Clever Use of Facebook

T-Mobile have scored big time with their new Welcome Back campaign (even though we’ll all call it ‘Welcome Home’).

If you haven’t seen it yet keep some hankies at the ready as you’re sure to blub at the end. But what really impressed me is the way they’ve integrated Facebook into the plot. This morning at 9am (about 12 hours after the ad first aired on Channel 4) they had around 2,000 ‘likes’. Another 12 hours on and they have over 8,000 ‘likes’ and over 150,000 views on YouTube.

The 3 minute advert mixes professional singers with unsuspecting public at the Arrival Hall of Heathrow Terminal 5. The whole ad was shot on Wednesday this week.

Last night I happened to catch the ad as I was channel hopping and thought ‘that was cool’.

Then this morning while updating my Facebook I was exposed to Facebook pay per click ad asking me if I’d watched the ad. A click later (and few pence cost to T-Mobile) I was on their very new Facebook page only set up 3 days ago.

So what can we learn from this clever campaign if we don’t have the 6 figure sum it probably cost to shoot and run this ad?

Emotion sells and this execution really tugs at the heart strings
Video is still the darling of today’s web world
Your video has more chance of going viral if it doesn’t overtly sell
Try to engage prospects and customers across different media
Use Facebook advertising to send the right profile of prospects to your FB page
Engage with your ‘likers’ once they are on your Facebook page

It will be interesting to see how T-Mobile follow up with me on Facebook now they have my attention. Will it make me switch from Orange? We’ll they’re now sharing transmitters so not likely. But thanks for a great ad guys!

Does your business have a Facebook Page yet? If you have one are you doing it the right way? Only today I received a suggestion to ‘friend’ a business that was using a personal account to promote their business – a big no, no as far as Facebook is concerned.

I’ve recently run a couple of ‘Facebook for Business’ workshops at the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce (there’ll be another in September) and thought I would list a few new Facebook pages created by attendees.One of the features of Facebook is you can select a unique, short URL (web address) once you have more than 25 people ‘Like’ you. Therefore, in the interests of helping these businesses out please hit the ‘Like’ button when you check them out.

Social Media – Getting It Right

For most businesses avoiding the use of social media as a business and marketing tool is a mistake. Equally, companies that do adopt social media can damage their brand by getting it wrong.

While Alasdair Hobbs from FBC Manby Bowdler focussed on internal risks relating to employment law in his presentation, my focus was on external risks.

Social Media Risks

Social Media has the potential to catapult previously unknown companies into the consciousnesses of their ideal prospects. However, you wouldn’t want this fame for the wrong reasons.

I have been asked to prepare a presentation for a HR Forum on the do’s and don’ts of social media and would welcome your feedback and experiences. The topics to be covered are:

- Internal risks such as employee relations and recruitment
- External risks such as brand protection, regulatory compliance and admitting liability for mistakes
- Cyber security for users

Selling On Twitter

This morning I gave a presentation, ‘Selling on Twitter’, to members of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce. It was good to see how many members are using Twitter effectively but not surprising that a few had abandoned their accounts. Plus about 25% of the room have yet to take the plunge (I wonder how long it took them to embrace email)?
